It's March 14th, 1:59 P.M. (3/14 1:59)! That means it's pi day, the celebration of everyone's favorite mathematical constant.
First accurately calculated by Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BC), pi is the ratio between the circumference of a circle and its diameter, and a concept our Mini students are intimately familiar with.
Pi shows up frequently in our world. We see it in pop culture, (see The life of Pi) in history, (the great pyramid at Giza has ratio of perimeter to height of 1760:280, approximately 2π) and in nature (the length of a river's winding path divided by the distance from the source to the ocean as measured in a straight line is on average, 3.14). Pi also shows up a lot at Tupper Mini, especially in our math classes. 3.141592653 (and so on and so forth) is the constant that permeates our geometry lessons.
So go out and celebrate pi day. Bake a pie. Bake a pi pie! Memorize the first hundred digits of pi! Calculate the circumference of a circle.
